In 2022, an EMP detonation has caused a global blackout that has massive, destructive implications all over the world. Directed by Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo’s Shinichiro Watanabe, Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is a new and highly-anticipated animated short which serves as a prologue for the upcoming feature film Blade Runner 2049.
The first short is 2036: NEXUS DAWN in which we see Jared Leto’s Niander Wallace, the creator of a new series of androids, on a mission to repeal a more than a decade long replicant prohibition.
2048: NOWHERE TO RUN is the second short film starring Dave Bautista Sapper Morton, a replicant on the run.
BLADE RUNNER 2049 BLACK OUT 2022 SPOILERS BELOW
The anime story tells that soon after the events in the original, which happen in the fictional 2019, a new series of NEXUS 8 replicants with natural lifespans were manufactured.
Soon after, the worst of humanity started organizing into “human supremacy movements” with the goal of identifying and killing all replicants. A couple of them fight back by causing a global blackout. We learn that the blackout leads to the prohibition of replicant production, which then seals the fate of the TYRELL CORPORATION. Ten years later, a new corporation called THE WALLACE CORP. wins permission to manufacture a new breed of replicants.
We were quite sceptical how an anime would blend into the Blade Runner world as we were about the whole short-films-building-hype marketing thing that Ridley Scott is doing with his recent movies. But this final, anime short, is kind of stunning and really draws you into the Blade Runner universe. Those incredible visuals just might turn it into our favorite short of all three.
There has been a great deal of positive reactions to early screenings of Denis Villeneuve’s BLADE RUNNER 2049 and we can’t wait for October 6 to see if it really is the deep plunge into the scifi genre and “better that the original” masterpiece people are proclaiming it to be.
