Denis Villeneuve is in early talks with Legendary to direct the Dune reboot, Variety has reported.
There is not comment on this from the production company that bought the film and TV rights for the Duniverse franchise in November.
Poorly received at first, David Lynch’s 1984 screen adaptation of the Dune, later became a cult film.
Syfy has made two miniseries adaptations. Both were among the three highest-rated programs ever to be broadcast by the channel.
Set in the distant future, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. As the planet is the only source of the “spice” melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is highly contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, Paul leads a rebellion to retake control of the planet. The story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature.
He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe.
As Villeneuve makes his way from Arrival to Blade Runner to Dune, control over the cinematic sci-fi universe might be handed to him already.
