BLADE RUNNER BLACK OUT 2022, directed by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe, is going be the third in a series of shorts set in the Blade Runner cinematic universe.
This short takes place three years after the events of the original film and it involves an electricity failure on the west coast of the US for which the replicants are blamed.
The teaser video released by Sony Pictures Japan shows concept art, a few action sequences and the artists and animators that work on them.
Director Watanabe says his goal was to pay maximum respect to one of the films that had the most influence on him.
The work that has influenced me the most in my anime profession would be, of course, Blade Runner.
The first short is 2036: NEXUS DAWN in which we see Jared Leto’s Niander Wallace, the creator of a new series of more advanced androids, trying to repeal a more than a decade long replicant prohibition.
2048: NOWHERE TO RUN is the second short in which Dave Bautista gives an intense performance as Sapper Morton, a replicant on the run.
The shorts are meant to show some of the events that took place in the timeline between 2019, the year in the 1982 Ridley Scott original movie, and the the Denis Villeneuve sequel BLADE RUNNER 2049, which is set to premiere on October 6.
